1800's MEDICAL HAND HELD CANDLE LANTERN

1800's ANTIQUE MEDICAL SPRING LOADED CANDLE LANTERN

This is actually a beautiful solid brass, of very high quality, candle lantern. It is identical to the candle lantern made by MAW of London although it does not have the MAW company logo. Instead, it has a beautiful mark of two crescent moons faced opposite. I have yet to identify who this mark belongs to.

The Mica sheet was a challenge to remove. It is 98% intact with only one small area of damage. Overall, it was difficult to clean and restore given the amount of melted old wax inside the entire lantern.

Research indicates that given the high quality of the metal and construction, it most likely was used in a medical situation such as a hand held surgical light or a nurses light.

I have replaced the candle and lit it once for photo purposes.  My research indicates this candle lantern was produced by S. Maw Son & Son, LDT of London.
